Federal Government
Canadian Heritage – Young Canada Works: Young Canada Works (YCW) offers students and recent graduates under age 30 the chance to put their skills to the test, build career equity, earn money for their education or get started on the right career path. Summer jobs and internships give young people access to unique opportunities to learn and work, whether it be to practice their second language in a museum, work in an Aboriginal friendship centre or even travel abroad.
Canadian Pacific Railway Co-Op Education Program: The Summer Student Program at Canadian Pacific Railway runs annually from May to August and enables students an opportunity to gain work experience.
Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP): The prime objective of FSWEP is to provide full-time students with work experience related to their Field of Study and to provide them with learning opportunities.
National Capital Commission: A Crown corporation of the Government of Canada, the NCC is the steward of federal lands and buildings in the National Capital Region (i.e. Ottawa). Its job is to plan, develop and use these properties as a source of pride and unity for Canadians. The NCC hires students every summer for events, tours, etc.
National Research Council Student Employment Program: Provides students with practical career-related experience in research and development, library sciences, communications, marketing and other areas. The program offers students a challenging and intellectually stimulating environment, while providing them with access to superior equipment, facilities and expertise. Each term lasts for a period of approximately 16 weeks (4 months) and work can occur full-time between May and August and part-time between September and April.
Parks Canada Student Employment Program: Access over 1,000 student jobs across Canada every year. Jobs normally run from May to September in areas such as resource conservation services, visitor services, heritage presentation activities, assistance on the waterways or office support. Students have an opportunity to learn about Parks Canada and the federal government, and gain valuable work experience while developing and improving their employability skills.
Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY) is an office which targets young people, mostly secondary and post-secondary students. The primary mandate of an SCCY is to assist students in their search for summer employment by connecting them with local employers and helping them prepare their resumes. Visit a local SCCY office for help finding a summer job.
Student Connections: Post-secondary students are hired as Student Business Advisors (SBA) and receive valuable on-the-job technology and business experience that will enhance their future employability. In addition, wages earned through the internship help youth finance their education.
Youth Employment on Parliament Hill: Includes positions in Senate and House of Commons, as well as at the Library of Parliament.
Provincial Government
Ontario Public Service Regular Student Hiring: Individual government ministries post summer positions for students of all ages in many different fields. Positions range from 6-16 weeks. Recruitment usually takes place in the spring, depending on the starting dates of the positions.
Ontario Summer Experience Program (SEP): SEP offers nearly 4,000 summer jobs across Ontario with the Ontario Public Service, its agencies, and other community groups. These full-time positions for Ontario residents under age 24 last 7 weeks on average and occur between mid May and the end of August.
Summer Jobs Program: Whether you want to find a job, start your own business, or come and work for the Government of Ontario this summer, there's lots of work available through Ontario's summer jobs programs. It also pays employers $2 per hour to hire summer students.
YMCA Summer Jobs Service: Provides free access to a Summer Jobs counselor who will help you connect with employers in your community looking to hire. You will also receive support with resume and interviewing skills. Students ages 15-24 (29 with a disability) are eligible.
Municipal Government
City of Toronto Summer Employment: Summer employment with the Toronto Public Service can be a great way to develop employability skills by providing on-the-job learning opportunities. The Toronto Public Service will be posting all available Summer Employment Opportunities on the website below - jobs are posted as they become available.
Toronto Parks and Recreation – “Hiring Now” Job Board: Hiring Now offers part-time culture and recreation jobs. You can work in a variety of program areas, including aquatics, arts and heritage, camps, community programs, fitness and wellness and sports. It's a great way to earn money while getting involved in your community.
Online Job Boards
Some of these job boards have specific segments devoted to jobs for students. For those that do not, try searching for keywords “student” “summer” “internship” etc.
Sites such as Craigslist, Kijiji and other community classifieds are not moderated and may have scams. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is! Be aware and do not respond to any ad that looks sketchy.
